Australian Leadership Awards

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is an initiative for the Asia Pacific region that focuses on developing leaders who can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes. ALA provides scholarships for post-graduate studies in Australia and for short-term fellowship opportunities in specialised research study or for professional attachments through participating Australian organisations.

KEY FEATURES:

·         The ALA is a new award which the Australian Government offers scholarships and fellowships for current and future leaders from the Asia-Pacific region.

·         ALA provides scholarships for longer-term post-graduate study at masters or doctoral level and fellowships for short-term research, study or professional attachments.

·         They will bring around 3200 scholars and fellows from 2006-2011

·         Managed by Aus Aid, the awards are part of Australia’s overseas aid program.

ELIGIBILITY:

Citizenship Requirements

Must be a citizen of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kiribati, Laos, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Viet Nam, Wallis & Futuna.

 

General Requirements

  • Be residing in a country other than Australia and apply from outside Australia
  • Be under 42 years of age in the year of Application
  • Have a letter of offer from an Australian institution for entry into full time study for Masters or Doctoral programs in Australia
  • Meet English language requirements, listed below
  • Meet visa requirements, listed below
  • Meet academic requirements (please refer to CCES information book).

English Language Requirements

  • An International English Language Test System (IELTS) Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5, with no band under 6.0; or
  • A Test of English as a foreign language score of at least 580 including a score of at least 4.5 in the test of written English; or
  • Have a degree from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, or Canada

Visa Requirements

  • Not Australian citizens or permanent residents, nor be in the process of applying
  • Neither married to, or be a defacto of, nor be engaged to a person who holds or is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence status;
  • Satisfy Australian government requirements for international student entry to Australia (which includes health and character checks conducted by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs).

SCHOLARSHIP ENTITLEMENTS:

Costs for travel and visa processing, $5000 contribution towards expenses such as rental bonds, text books, study materials, additional medical insurance, home contents insurance, excess baggage (whether on coming to Australia or returning home), an establishment allowance, contribution to living expenses, full academic fees, cost for over seas student health cover,

Successful applicants are notified by the 1 October 2006

Study must begin in Australia in 2007

PROCCESS FOR APPLYING:

Applicants must submit a full ALA scholarship application form and certified copies of all relevant documentation. Relevant documentation includes:

·         Complete ALA scholarship application form signed and dated by the applicant

·         Certified copies of the applicant’s birth certificate or the personal data page from the applicant’s passport (in original language and translated into English)

·         Certified copy of the Graduation certificate, Degree or Diploma of the most relevant academic qualifications completed by the applicant (in original language and translated into English)

·         Certified copies of full academic transcripts, showing all grades for all subjects/units attempted by the applicant (in original language and translated into English)

·         Curriculum Vitae/resume providing details of education and employment/work experience, relevant publications (if any) and unpublished theses (if any), membership of any professional associations, details of any honours or awards received and any relevant voluntary positions held, especially those demonstrating evidence of community or professional leadership.

·         Referee Questionnaires from three referees submitted as originals or certified copies in English if possible, or provided as a certified translation of the original. The referees should include first hand knowledge of the applicant’s potential as a leader. Applicants should seek references from their Academic or Department Head, and/or a person outside the applicant’s university or place of employment who is familiar with the applicant’s work, (not a family member).

·         Results of an English test completed since 1 February 2006 (not required for applicants who have a degree from a university in Australia, New Zealand, the U.K, the U.S.A or Canada)

·         Applicants for Doctoral Studies, Masters by research and Masters by combined coursework and research (proposing a study program compromising 50% or more of research) must include an outline of the proposed research project (up to 200 words) and include details of any proposed fieldwork outside Australia required as part of the research.

·         Letter of offer from an Australian university confirming admission into an appropriate Masters degree or PhD program in 2007

·         If available: Graduate Record Exam, Graduate Management Aptitude Test or Graduate Skills Aptitude Test results

 

Three copies of the complete set of all application documents must be sent with the original application form and certified copies of documents. Applicants should not send originals of certified supporting documents. They will not be returned.
