Australian Development Scholarships

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) aims to contribute to long-term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote good governance, economic growth and human development. ADS provides people with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country, through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian institutions.

KEY FEATURES:

·         ADS are an important element of the Australian Government’s overseas aid program and will continue as a central part of Australian Scholarships

·         Valued at around $150 million a year the scholarship account for 8-10% of Australia’s bilateral aid.

·         ADS scholarships are managed by Aus Aid

·         ADS are for full time study towards an undergraduate, post-graduate or technical degree

·         Scholarships cover return airfare to Australia, academic and other compulsory fees, basic health insurance, establishment allowance and a living allowance.

Citizenship Requirements

Must be a citizen of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Lesotho, Malawi, Maldives, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Zambia.

 

General Requirements

·         Not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status (unless you are applying as a citizen of the Cook islands, Niue and Tokelau

·         Not to be married to/or be a defacto of, or engaged toa person who holds or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status

·         Not hold or have held an Australian government funded scholarship in the preceding 12 months at the time of application

·         Satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the ADS is to be undertaken

·         Not already be studying at an Australian institution at the time of application

·         For undergraduate courses, have completed high school in their country of citizenship

·         For post-graduate courses, have been resident and/ or working in their country of citizenship prior to the date of their ADS application.

SCHOLARSHIP ENTITLEMENTS:

Costs for tuition fees, Airfare, Establishment Allowance, Contribution to Living Expenses, Overseas Student Health Cover, cost to cover Pre-course English, Supplementary Academic Support (Tutorial Assistance).

PROCCESS FOR APPLYING:

Eligible applicants will receive an ADS application form from the Post. Applicants select the Institution(s) at which they would prefer to study by completing the ADS application form. Applicants must complete three original application forms (or as otherwise advised by the Post) and provide three sets of relevant documentation to the post. Relevant documentation includes:

·         Complete ADS scholarship application form signed and dated by the applicant

·         Certified copies of the applicant’s birth certificate or the personal data page from the applicant’s passport (in original language and translated into English)

·         Certified copy of the Graduation certificate, Degree or Diploma of the most relevant academic qualifications completed by the applicant (in original language and translated into English)

·         Certified copies of full academic transcripts, showing all grades for all subjects/units attempted by the applicant (in original language and translated into English)

·         Curriculum Vitae/resume providing details of education and employment/work experience, relevant publications (if any) and unpublished theses (if any), membership of any professional associations, details of any honours or awards received and any relevant voluntary positions held, especially those demonstrating evidence of community or professional leadership.

·         Referee Questionnaires from three referees submitted as originals or certified copies in English if possible, or provided as a certified translation of the original. The referees should include first hand knowledge of the applicant’s potential as a leader. Applicants should seek references from their Academic or Department Head, and/or a person outside the applicant’s university or place of employment who is familiar with the applicant’s work, (not a family member).

·         Results of an English test completed since 1 February 2006 (not required for applicants who have a degree from a university in Australia, New Zealand, the U.K, the U.S.A or Canada)

·         Applicants for Doctoral Studies, Masters by research and Masters by combined coursework and research (proposing a study program compromising 50% or more of research) must include an outline of the proposed research project (up to 200 words) and include details of any proposed fieldwork outside Australia required as part of the research.

·         Letter of offer from an Australian university confirming admission into an appropriate Masters degree or PhD program in 2007

·         If available: Graduate Record Exam, Graduate Management Aptitude Test or Graduate Skills Aptitude Test results
